It’s actually not clear to me how I ended up on the mailing list of NOLAFugees, an online magazine. Did I sign up for it? Do I know these people? But in any case, I’m on it, and as far as I can tell they are perfectly fine people. In fact, I’ll just say they’re friends.

A couple of years ago I did some research into the song "St. James Infirmary," wrote up what I found, emailed that essay to friends and posted it on my web site (as part of a series of "Letters From New Orleans," as I was living in that city at the time).
